Photo Number 268

This is a cabinet card that we can date 1889. Frank Jay Haynes, the photographer was at this location that year. I wonder why the x on the photo?  I read someplace where the x meant that the person was dead, yet I have lots of photos that my Mother In Law marked with an x of her very much living children.
Note the envelope flap mark on this side of the cabinet card..I have seen this before, apparently it fit inside an special envelope.  I was curious about the name on the back of this photo..how did it come to be there..who was Mrs. James Green of Portal North Dakota?  Is she the woman in the photo?  I have decided that she is not, but perhaps someone mailed this photo to her.

I researched the Greens and none of the dates I have fit this photo.  However they were interesting people.
James Green Jan 9, 1877 to December 16, 1936.    His father ( John L.)  was the Chinese Inspector for the US Immigration Service in Portal.  The family had moved to Portal in 1895.  When John L Green died of diabetes in 1905, his son donated the NW corner of his farm for a cemetery.  I can find no record of a Mrs. James Green..she is not buried in the family cemetery.  However the Green Family was quite large..there were thirteen children, and not all of them are buried in the cemetery either.

I never could find any reference to Wheatland..and the 1/4 mile south west of town does not fit where her husbands farm was one mile east of Portal. So I will give up on this one.

Photo Number 267

This is a real photo postcard that I got at a garage sale, it is an Azo  brand postcard from 1904 to 1918.  It looks like this was a busy young family of mostly girls, the little person on the left is probably a boy, and the baby that is perched precariously on the chair could be either a boy or a girl.
Thanks for dropping by, do come again:)

Photo Number 265

A lady feeding a deer..I know I have not posted this one before!  She was probably on vacation and her husband took a photo of her feeding the deer.  We used to have a tourist trap type Deer Park where you could take little kids to feed the deer, the deer got really tame.

Three girls..sisters maybe...the back of the photo is marked Amanda Isaacson.  I contacted the Historical Society in Wadena County, they were very helpful.  J Tessman was in business there from 1899 to 1909. Another fellow ran the photo studio for a year and then went out of business completely in 1910.

I am not sure if one of these girls is Amanda or not.  The gal on the right seems to be the oldest.  This photo could have been taken just before she was married.    The historical society gave me this info:  Amanda N. Niska married Charles S. Isaacson on January 17 1900 in Menahga Minnesota by H J Haarala.

This one I call "nightgown baby."  Isn't she or he beautiful?

As warm as it has been lately, I would like to wear my nightgown all day too.  I am sorry I missed posting a photo yesterday, the day went so fast, and I was so busy, suddenly it was nighttime and the whole day had slipped by.   Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Photo Number 262

This is a cabinet card.  I purchased this card at an Antique Shop in Park Rapids, Minnesota.  The photographer was Goble and Wenzel of 114 1/2 South High Street Colombus O  which I will assume is Ohio. This photo has EXTRA FINISH as it is noted on the front of the card.  Henry Wenzel was at this studio in 1890 and 1891 so that is what we will use as a date on this photo.
Is she thin or what? I wonder if they lived in Ohio all their lives?  We will never know as this photo is unmarked.

Another photo of Anna Dreis..and a relative? or a friend?  There are no names on this photo, so we know nothing for certain.  The photo could have been going to Anna Dries instead of  Anna Dreis..you just never know with these old photos.  I think it is cute that in yesterdays photo she has a locket or a small watch..and today the other gal is wearing it.  The other gal has better taste in sleeves too.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update: This photo went Full Circle 51 on April 09, 2012
From Kathleen: I believe this is Anna and her sister Mary Ida Bauer...they were just 2 years apart in age.

Photo Number 260

This is Anna Dreis.  The photographer is Julius Tessman of Wadena, Minnesota, he only worked in Wadena in the year 1914.
I found an Anna Katherine Dreis that was born in 1878..who died in Hubbard County in 1960..very near Wadena.  The gal in the photo would have to be 36..I don't think she looks that old..do you?

I also found an Anna Marie Dreis that was born in 1897..that would make her 17, now that is more believable.

She is all dressed up, those sleeves on that blouse are really something.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update: From Norkio
The blouse style is lovely, and she has a pin locket or watch on too. Those sleeves are a pain to make. They are two part sleeves - one sleeve goes all the way up in a normal shape, then second part is the pouf which is sewn onto the normal sleeve. A good seamstress will put net or tulle inside the pouf so it will hold its shape.

Ellens Gem..this is one great house for it's time..which I think may be about 1945.  It has a beautiful front porch, just perfect for afternoon naps.

There has been some excitement about Photo Number 255 you may want to check it out.  Iggy did some great detective work!

Photo Number 258

This is a cabinet card.  It is most likely a photo of two sisters.  I am curious if anyone knows what the lighter colored ribbons signify..if anything.  I thought they might be bonnet ties...but I am not sure.  Louis Olson was the photographer at Fertile, Minnesota.  Fertile is such a little tiny town I was surprised that they ever had a photographer.
The gowns seem similar, perhaps they were traveling gowns as their sleeves seem to be a bit more practical.  I found the trim on both sides of the jacket to be interesting.  I will guess that this photo was taken around 1890.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again..I am a bit late today..I was off picking raspberries:)

Photo Number 257

This is Mr and Mrs William Sprenger, this might be their wedding photo..I bet it was winter!  The lovely bride has some sort of lacy drapey string adorning her hat.  The photographer was Meyers of Watertown, Wisconsin.  I will guess that this is a photo from the 1920's.  She must have been tall, usually the men are seated and the women are standing.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Iggy:
Adella A Schultz SPRENGER, b. 6/28/1900 died 5/26/1991.
Husband was William SPRENGER b. 1/15/1901 d. 2/9/1964. I believe they died in Watertown, WI. ?

It is a party!  What I wouldn't give for a pair of those saddle shoes!  This must be the 1950's.  Look at the different kinds of chairs, way off to the right I can see the leg of a Duncan Phyfe chair...it has a familiar curve to it's legs.

Talking about a party, there is cause to celebrate..Norkio a regular commenter has finally succumbed to Old Photoitis.  She has started an Old Photo Blog , she calls hers Who Were They?  I am sure you will want to visit her!

Photo Number 255

Another photo of a mystery place.  Thatched roofs..Model T's or Model A's..?? Discreet bathing attire.  Chairs and rocking chairs outside to enjoy the evening air.

To make it even more confusing, this is what is on the back.  Was the photo just used as a note card for information..or was Hiram McDonald in the photo?  Possibly a 1920's photo?  Why is it that some of these photos just bring up more questions than they answer?

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update:  Thanks to some great detective work by Iggy we now know that this was Coronado Tent City in California. The photo was taken before 1923, because that was the year that the thatched roofs were removed.  Up until 1923 it was only a summer resort where you could rent a tent by the day or by the week. It must have been a really cool place to stay!  Here is a link to some old postcards and photos..Shellbelle's Tiki Hut.
July 22, 2010 Shellbelles Tiki Hut has a few more old photos of this summer place!  Here is the link!

Photo Number 254

A lady relaxing at the beach..this is probably a photo from the late 1940's or early 1950's.  There is a Schlitz Beer sign in the background, suppose she had too much beer..probably not.  Our beaches here in Minnesota have never looked like this..it must be a beach out east on the Atlantic..or I suppose it could be the west coast beach on the Pacific..but it just doesn't say California to me.   New Jersey maybe?? Perhaps my readers have some input!
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update: Iggy found a viewmaster slide of Atlantic City..the signs in the background are very similar in 1957.  Thanks Iggy!

Sincerely Betty.  She must have graduated in the class of 1943.  I wondered from where??  Possibly from Hibbing , Minnesota as a photographer by the name of Campbell had a studio there in 1942 and 1943.  I searched for a class list from 1943 ..I couldn't find any.  This photo is in a lovely art deco type folder. She is a beautiful young lady.

November  22, 2010 Update: Iggy found a photo of a lady named Betty who could be "our" Betty.  I have sent her son Douglas a copy of this blog post and a letter..we will see what develops..Thanks Iggy:)

Photo Number 252

If this was an unmarked real photo postcard, I would say this is a little girl.  Following the rules..girls part their hair in the middle, boys part their hair on the side.  I would be wrong.

This is Glenn Arthur Goddard, this is an Azo Real Photo Postcard with triangles pointing up which means it is from 1904 to 1918.  Again we have a child wearing a larger belt, maybe it was a boy thing to wear the belt.  I got this postcard at an Antique Shop in Park Rapids..as you can see it was fifty cents.

Full Circle Eight

Our full circle number eight was completed early this week.. It is a double full circle.  It will all come together..

This is a new photo..I saw it in a local antique shop and knew right away who it was without even turning over the photo.  It was Arthur Meilicke.

 Photos Number 134
I contacted Kate, she is the sister in law of a relative.  I had mailed her the first two photos of this young family. I mailed her this new photo also.

Then I heard from Art.  Arthur or Carl Arthur as he is known as was his Great Uncle.  His Grandfather (Edward Edmund) was Carl Arthur's only surviving brother.   I made a CD copy of the photos and sent it to Art.  He in return shared some of the family history with me!

Carl Arthur entered the Moravian College and Theological Seminary at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1892.  He graduated with honors six years later.  He was ordained in 1898 in Goshen, ND.  He served churches in Hector, Minnesota and Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.  His lovely wife was Eugenia and they had five children, three of which survived.  Clement was born in 1901 and was a Physician.  Myron was born in 1905, he was a teacher. and Francis was born in 1913 he also became a Physician.

In earlier family history they immigrated from Moravia to Brandenburg, Germany as a result of religious persecution of the Moravian Brotherhood.  They came to America because of the land opportunity and because of the Ango - Prussian War that broke out in 1866. It was probably a miracle that they were released from Prussian citizenship as it was only granted to one in a thousand.   Then to top it all off not everyone could go..the part of the family that we have photos from stayed and completed his ( Edward)  military service and then emigrated in 1867...his bride ( Wilhelmina) - to - be came with her family a year earlier.

Art sent me this photo. My guess is that this photo was taken sometime in the mid to late 1890's. Perhaps in 1898 when he( Arthur also known as Carl Arthur) returned from Pennsylvania.

Art also shared with me this beautiful photo of his Grandparents on their wedding day in 1901. Wasn't she beautiful!

This family has been an adventure for me, I received a note of thanks from Kate with $5.00 enclosed for postage..it was totally unnecessary..but I will throw it in the kitty and purchase some more Forgotten Old Photos.  She wrote " Wish to say thank you for sending the pictures of Carl Arthur Meilicke and family."  You are welcome Kate.  I hope your sister and brother in law enjoy them.

Art wrote "Thanks!  I will mail you some family info soon."  I was pleased to receive a packet from Art this week, the family history that he shared was very interesting, I have shared the highlights with you here.  I do plan to go to Casselton, ND  to the Graveyard some day just to see where this couple Carl Arthur and Eugenia are buried, if and when I do I will post photos here.

Thank you to Art for sharing more about his relatives!  Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

I suppose this was taken by a traveling photographer.  I think this might be a mule. Two little boys confident in their mount, I do notice they have a bridle with a bit.  What do you think for a year?  1920 or earlier?

Photo Number 250

I happened along this photo this past weekend in a shop that I will call Dorset 3 as it is the third Antique Shop we have visited in Dorset, Minnesota.   The Graf Waldersee was built by Blohm and Voss of Hamburg in 1898 for the Hamburg Amerika Line.  In later years it was taken over from Germany in WWI as a troop transport service.

This must be part of the crew, perhaps there is someone that can translate the German?? written at the bottom of the photo.  This must be part of the crew, and the photo was probably taken in 1906.  If they are not crew perhaps they are a group of immigrants??
Thanks for stopping by do come again:)  Click on the photo to see it larger!
Update from Ena! Thanks!!
the german at the bottom is hard to read.. I think, it means in german: "Zum Andenk. Neujar in New York." translation: in memory of new year's day in new york.

I call this one Sunday Couple..they look like they are visiting someone on a summer Sunday afternoon, and stopped for a photo.  I will guess 1940's on this one.

Photo Number 248

Three small children..I enjoyed the relaxed look of this photo, the oldest boy with the saggy socks, the toddler in the romper and the little girl with the big old bow in her hair, and her one pantaloon leg up and one down.  The sign in the background says ---------Hotel....It would be a pure guess at what the first word is.  This photo is probably from around 1920.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Here is another scan..I believe it says Cottage Hotel on the sign.  When I got this photo out to rescan it at a higher resolution I noticed a date on the back Sept 1 1925 Sioux Falls, SD at a shop called Canedys Cameras Shop or Lanedys..the first letter is only partially there. :)

I was quite taken with this photo.  This woman seems so confident.  I would loved to have seen the rest of her clothing.  The blouse is very shiny and embroidered with a sparkly thread..the jacket seems to be a work of art.  What in the world do you suppose this woman did..she is not your normal run of the mill housewife or teacher..was she an entertainer..or a saloon gal..or a circus performer?   Do you have any ideas?

Photo Number 246

This is a photo taken by  J. Tessman at Wadena,  Minnesota..he was a photographer there in 1914.  Is this woman a Nun..or a Bride??  Since I am Missouri Synod Lutheran..I have no idea what the practices of the Catholic Church are. I am hoping that one of my readers will have an idea!
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update: Most of my readers say First Communion..thanks for the input! :)

Update: January 01, 2011
From Alberto: Some religious orders use to dress the postulants like a bride, when they enter to the novitiate. This moment, the Mother removes their bride veils and cuts their hair.
Afterwards, the postulants retire to another room, where they dress their novice new habit and sometimes remove their footwear. Returning to the church, the Mother imposes them the novices white veil, and sometimes a thorns crown on it.

Photo Number 245

I purchased this photo yesterday in an Antique Shop in Park Rapids, Minnesota.  It was a cute baby..and it was fifty cents..I was sold.  Last night while scanning the photos..I always check for anything written on the back of the photo..from behind the photo this note came fluttering out.  I was so excited, I was hoping for more..but this is what I got.  Well it was better than no note..
So my photo got a name..Marie and her Mothers name is Aeta or Alta..Aeta I think.  The photo was taken by  C Raven of Wadena  Minnesota sometime between 1912 and 1922.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Iggy:
Alta M Livingston Aurzada (July 23, 1882 in Floyd County, Iowa - Oct. 17, 1973 in Wadena County, Minnesota) was the wife of John Peter Aurzada (1880 - 1925) and the mother of Marie Alice Aurzada Sinkler (Sep. 30, 1919 - 1998).

Photo Number 244

I have always loved a house with a porch, someplace to sit and relax on a summer evening.  This photo would appear to be showing off the new sidewalk instead of the fabulous porch and the beautiful woman..this photo looks to be from the 1940's.  I bet there was a beautiful lead glass piece in the top part of the window.

Full Circle Number Seven

Far Guy and I met with some very nice ladies on Friday afternoon..relatives of people whose photos I have featured here.  They recognized the following photos.
Photo Number 51                                 Photo Number 37

I called this first  photo Grace...because that was the name written on the back.  It is not Grace..it is her sister Esther or Bertha. Both of these photos are probably Esther..but they could be Bertha.

This is Esther and Walt Davison

This is Lucille Davison, she is Bertha and Floyds Daughter. Bertha and Floyd moved to Wisconsin.

This is CJ Vogue and Mathilda an Uncle and Aunt.
The ladies took these photos and a few others that I had not yet scanned..they were relatives..and another old photo of Bob and Joyce.  The ladies are cousins of Bob and Joyce which is Full Circle Four
They have no idea who these photos belonged to originally, Marlys did say that it is her Mothers handwriting on several of them, but she has no idea how they ended up in the Antique Shop for sale.  We can only speculate that these photos were tucked away in some box or other container and they were not meant to end up in the Antique Shop.

They were very happy to get the photos, and I was very happy to lighten my load of Forgotten Old Photos.

Far Guy and I found it curious that their relatives were up here and then took off for Wisconsin and Nebraska, when all of our relatives ended up in this area because farmland was affordable. Their old place is about 50 miles from here, and Marlys the recipient of these photos is Graces daughter and she lives in Park Rapids, Minnesota which is our nearest "town".

This is a real photo postcard that Iggy emailed me,  it is an Azo postcard with triangles pointing up so it is from 1904 to 1918.  Iggy got this card at a thrift shop..it is a great find!  We both wonder about this well dressed young man..this might be a photo taken for his high school graduation...he is very handsome.  Thanks Iggy for sharing..he comments on the old photos quite often..I always appreciate everyones comments!  Iggys blog is called IntenseGuy, stop by and say hi!

Photo Number 240

Five little girls, I wonder if they are sisters, or cousins or friends?  Note the horse and buggy in the background.  This was probably taken in the late 1910's or the 1920's.

Today I am finally meeting with the daughter of  Grace who I featured in photo number fifty-one..it seems like so long ago..I hope she can identify and rescue a few more of these Old Forgotten Photos. We will see.

Photo Number 239

This might be a photo from the 1920's.  The car might be a Packard or an Overland.  I believe this might be a family.  Father, Mother and three children that came to visit from the big city in their new car.
The women..all together for a photo.  That trim on what I see as a red dress is really something. This is the last of the Laporte photos for now.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
