Standing on a chair copy

This little guy seems to be having a good time.  He is out in the yard where the laundry has been hung out on the line.  I think that this photo was probably taken in the 1940’s or 1950’s from the romper that the little boy is wearing.  He made me smile..I hope he makes you smile too!

Photo Number 326

Paul Aurzada
Another baby in a chair..this one is pretty fancy and he seems propped up against one of the arms of the chair.  The card for this one is different and the photo itself has the strange white shaped frame that goes around the actual photo..it must have been a new process..early Photoshop?!  I will date this photo in the 1920’s…it has that silver look to it that most photos from the 1920’s have. Corrected to 1915.
Paul Aurzada twojpg   This is the name on the back of the photo.  Paul Aurzada.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again.  I did find some great photos in one Antique Shop today..I find myself looking for old wedding photos..I found two..and strange or interesting photos that make you go huh? We will get to them all sooner or later.  There is a little action happening with Photo Number 324..Abra has been sleuthing again! :)

Update: Info from Iggy
There is a record of Aurzada, Paul Joseph dying in Wadena County on 21-Jun-1993. And another showing him born in Wadena in 20-Jan-1915.

Iggy also found out that Pauls brother Leonard died recently in nearby Park Rapids, MN ..and he also sent me the name and address of a relative.  I will mail them a copy of this blog, perhaps through them we can find out if Paul has any living relatives.
Thanks Iggy! :)

Photo Number 325

PR cute baby

This photo measures 5 1/2 inches long by 3 3/4 inches wide before it was mounted on the elaborate card. Finished it measures 10 inches by 6inches.

With the hair adornments I think we can safely say that this is a little girl ..and by little I mean tiny..as she appears to be just a little peanut perched almost in a movie star type pose in that chair.

I purchased this photo at an Antique Shop in Park Rapids, Minnesota.  I believe that we can date this photo around 1910. The red patch is a wax seal that has not been imprinted with anything. I am not sure how common they were or in what year photos they appeared.

Photo Number 324

Well, this week lets look at a category that I made up.  Children in chairs. The photos that have me saying..oh my I hope they didn’t fall.
Leonard and Otis copy
This is Leonard and Otis, they look to be fairly close in age..perhaps a year apart. This is a Real Photo Postcard and it is from right around 1910 to 1920.  Cyko made these cards from 1904 to 1920..but this particular one was printed in 1910 and after.
Leonard and Otis two
Dear Sister and Bro.                           Leonard and Otis
Well at last I’ve got the boys picture. What do you thing of them  ant I get some nice boys.  They all say around here that it is good of them.  Bye by Esther and Alf

This Real Photo Postcard was sent to Mrs John Maloney, Hibbing Minn.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update from Abra:
These cute children are Leonard and Otis Gunderson, the first two children of Alfred and Esther (Forcier) Gunderson. The Gundersons had a dozen children in all, if I counted correctly. Mrs John Maloney was Esther's older sister, Mary Forcier. Esther & Alfred were married 9-15-1909. Leonard was born 4-16-1910 and Otis 9-7-1911. With that information, I would guess this photo is from 1912. The Gundersons and Forciers lived in Renville and Kandiyohi counties, very close to the county I live. Leonard and Otis married women with the same last name (possibly sisters--didn't search that far). Leonard died young (1957), while Otis died in 1978. There are many living relatives, and I will look for one of Leonard's or Otis' children/grandchildren to connect. Should be pretty easy; I just need more time in a day! (BTW, Esther's sister, Mary Maloney, moved around a bit after their marriage in 1905, but were settled near the rest of the family in Kandiyohi county by 1930).

Lady in weird black hat copy

This lady seems to be showing off the side view of her hat while looking away. That hat has some kind of a feather or something sticking out the back.  She appears to have a very long skirt on ..so we will date this one 1919. I get a brother/sister vibe from this one..how about you?  The porch behind them is interesting..I wonder what color those spindles were?

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Photo Number 322

Maggie mac and Friend BVA

This is a Real Photo Postcard, it is a Cyco Postcard from 1906 to 1915.  On further investigation, the Nordin Bros of Minneapolis, Elmer and Fred were only in business from 1914 to 1918..so therefore we can date this photograph 1914 or 1915.

Maggie Mac and Friend two Maggie Mac & friend

Their coats and skirts look warm, but whoever is wearing the light colored hat is pushing the season a bit.  I can only imagine how slippery those shoes were in ice or snow..or do you suppose they wore ladies boots or galoshes?

Photo from Pr Large Hat copy

Do you suppose this lady was fashion forward?  Was this hat the latest fashion? Macher was the photographer in New York. I bought this photo in an Antique Shop in Park Rapids, Minnesota…someone had a pretty fancy relative!  I am not sure what to date this one at, look at that purse..the purse and the hat with feathers seem to be of different eras…I am thinking 1910 for the hat and 1940 for the purse..obviously this photo has me confused. I need input..

Hats and a stump copy

Well, back to the Hats!  I wondered why these women would have their photo taken near a stump, but they are sitting on part of it..and I don’t think it is a real stump anyway…the base is too perfect. Is this just a backdrop in a Photographers Studio?  They have feathers in their hats and are outside of a church.  I wonder are they sisters or friends? What will I date this photo?  1920’s most likely.

Full Circle Eleven

Zearaths BVA

I have to interrupt hat week for a Full Circle!  Photo Number 305. It was returned to to Loretta’s daughter Darlene.

( Loretta is the little girl with the big bow in her hair).

Here is what Darlene shared with me:

Thanks for your response regarding the picture of my grandmother and mother.  My grandmothers name was actually Mary and I believe my great grandmother was Martha.  My mother died at 78 which was way too young, and I still think of her so often.  She was very vital as was my grandmother and always full of energy and mischief.

My grandmother, Mary Zeroth was a great person.  Mostly, she had a wonderful sense of humor.  She loved to play little tricks on us and when my parents went away, she would stay with us.  She, as well as my mother and her sisters, loved to play cards.  Mostly 500, and when they did, you would think it was for a million dollars.  All these women were hard workers and I especially remember my mother, as we scraped for a living on our 80 acre farm.  I have five siblings and it was hard times for us, but always, we had lots to eat, a roof over our heads and lots of love.  The trait of hard work was passed on to all of us and it is something I personally, thank my parents for.  My mother had seven siblings but two of them died at a young age.  I still have one aunt and one uncle that are my mothers sister and brother.

Thanks again Connie and I will keep in touch,
Darlene

Many thanks to Abra and Iggy for their help in researching this photo. Abra was able to piece this puzzle together,  this was our first locate using Facebook.

It is another fine day on the Forgotten Old Photo Blog:)

Elizabeths Birthday Sept 17

How about a hat week! This is a Real Photo Postcard.  These two gals are sporting some great hats!  I love the dresses too, they are so similar in cut, but with very different necklines that makes them look different and individual.  I would love to see Elizabeth’s gloves, but they are hidden behind her back.

Elizabeths Birthday Two

Elizabeth(friend) & Edna  Two Jolly Bums

There were two of these Real Photo Postcards at an Antique Shop near Nevis.  I purchased this one..the other one said Elizabeth’s Birthday Sept 17.  This is an Azo Postcard with the Triangles going up..so it is from 1904 to 1918.  In a further search for the photographer, George F. Coan I found he was at 499 Wabasha Street in St Paul in 1910.  He was from Lexington, Kentucky.

This is a cabinet card.  On the back are two words Aunt Joe.  I had no luck in finding  A. E. Strandberg in Elbow Lake, Minn.  I did find a A. Edward Strandberg doing business in 1910 in Alexandria,  Minnesota.  I think that this card looks to be from 1895 or 1900.

Photo Number 314

James Photographer C dV

This is a Cdv.  This lady looks very regal to me..like she was very confident and proud. This photo was most likely taken before 1880. Her lacey collar is very different from the jabots that we saw in other photos this week.

James Photographer two James was the Photographer at 413 and 415 Walnut Street Des Moines, Iowa.  I struck out while looking for him. I didn’t come up with any info.  This photo is not marked in anyway..except of course with the seventy-five cents that it cost me.  This week is turning into a ladies week..I did not plan it that way, it was just how the week unfolded.

Photo Number 313

Oleson Photographer Mpls
This is a CdV from 1876 to 1880.   She has a hair band on to keep the short bangs in place, I find it curious that the hair in front of her ear seems clipped.  I believe that you can see the corset lines in the front of the dress/blouse.  She is also wearing a jabot, which is is described as being a pleated, ruffled or lace trimmed frill. There is also something right in the center of that jabot..some kind of big button or broach.
Oleson Photographer Two
The back of this card is the same as yesterdays.  I got these cards in the same Antique Shop.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Norkio:
Now this girl is the younger of the two, I would guess between 15-20 years old. Yes, that's the top of her corset that you see - the lines over her bosom. My thought here is that she probably has bangs that go down to her ears, but for some reason she decided to pull the bangs away from her face. Maybe her mom insisted? Bangs were popular for younger girls. There's a section of a Laura Ingalls book all about the cutting of her bangs and how she used her slate pencil to curl the bangs. I think the book is In The Big City? This would have occurred around the same time that these photos were taken. I notice that her hair is also somewhat loose in the back, which also speaks to her younger age.

Photo Number 312

Oleson Photographer CdV This is another CdV.  This one was most likely taken 1876 to 1880.  I think I may have a relative of hers tomorrow..a sister maybe. They are wearing just about the same style dress, but with different jabots and their hair is done differently.  This gal has something in her hair, I am not certain if it is a hair clip or something crocheted. She looks far away in thought.
Oleson Photographer Mpls Two John H. Oleson was at this address over the Clementson’s Shoe Store from 1876 to 1880.  He was from Norway, he died in 1881 and his wife Anna G. took over his business for eight years until she remarried.
The sentence at the bottom appears to be Danish ..at least that is how Google translated it. It translates : Plate is stored for later reservation.  I find it curious why this was in Danish instead of Norwegian..perhaps most of his customers were Danes.
I got this CdV at an Antique shop in Dorset, Minnesota..it was seventy-five cents.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Norkio on the hair adornment!
That little bit you see in her hair is a mantilla comb. They were very popular and used on a chignon or other twist. The teeth are about 1/4" wide, tapering to about 1/8" at the tip. There are usually 5-8 teeth on the comb and they are between 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" long. Some women wore them "side on" like in this photo so you'd see the decoration from the side; other women wore them "front on" so that you would see the decoration peeping up over the crown of their head.

Photo Number 311

Lake City Mn Photographer CdV

This is a CdV or Cartes-de-visite.  They were used as calling cards, when you went to visit someone you left them a card.  They measure 2 1/2 inches by 4 inches. They were used from 1850 to 1900.

This lovely lady had her photo taken in Lake City, Minnesota at the Studio of Nelson and Morgeneier in 1882 or 1883, those were the years that W. E. Nelson was a photographer.  Morgeneier had many partnerships in his photographic adventures.  There is no other identification on this photo..so she is yet another lovely unknown.

Girl with wavy hair Dorset

This is an unknown photo, I purchased it at an Antique Shop in Dorset, MN.   The photographer is A. Hanson from Montevideo, Minn.   The info I found on him at the Minnesota Historical Society site states that he was in business there in the 1950’s.  I am sorry I just cannot make a 1950’s photo out of this one..the bob hairstyle and the wavy hair..it must be from the 1930’s.  The photo has the silvery reflective “stuff” in it which is typical of the early 1900’s not the mid 1900’s.

Family RPP no markings

This is a Real Photo Postcard.  This one is impossible to date as the reverse side has no markings..only four lines for a address.  I get a feeling that this photo is foreign.  If it is not foreign it is from the East coast..we do not have fancy double doors like this in the Midwest and look at his moustache..it looks German to me.  This couple do not look young enough to have small children..perhaps they are a favorite Uncle and Aunt..notice neither of them takes possession of the children like a parent would..their arms are behind their backs.

Sailor Suit Lake Park Antique shop

This is a photo from an Antique Shop near Lake Park, Minnesota.  There are no names on this photo and no photographers info, it could be from anyplace.   I do like the sailor suit..it is pretty cute.  I find the covering on the chair odd…perhaps someone is being covered up while hanging onto that baby.  This photo is most likely from around 1920.

This is Mabel Larson, she has beautiful eyes.  The cut of the dress seems simple and stark.  This may have been her graduation photo?  How old do you think she is?  17 or 18 is my guess, and this photo was probably taken around 1920.

Update from Iggy!
Martha, Loretta, John, and Louie Zeroth all living in the early 1900's in Stearns, MN. It appears many of them died young around 1923 (perhaps an accident or weather calamity?) In any event, there are no SSN records to be had.

Loretta (of Stearns, MN) married and had three children, Terrance Raymond Nelson, Thomas Henry Nelson (died 82 years in 1993 in Crow Wing, MN), Darlene Leona Nelson (died 64 years in 1999 in Hennepin, MN).

I suspect a grandchild or two of Loretta "is out there".

Iggy also had a question about Real Photo Postcards, about why an unknown event would inspire a postcard??? ..here is my answer.
In 1902 Kodak made the paper to print a negative onto a postcard..you could order as many as you wanted..to mail to friends. Traveling photographers would do the post cards too..but usually of towns and special events. In 1903 a special camera that used postcard size film enabled everyone that could afford the camera the ability to make any photo they took into a postcard!

Update: September 08, 2010:  I received a name and address from Iggy and I have sent off a copy of the postcard and an inquiry to an individual who may be Myrtles son..we will see what we hear:)

Family in 1916

This photo was taken in 1916, unfortunately the photographers name is so hard to read I cannot venture a guess.  I chose this photo because I liked the way the little boy has his hand around his Mother.  The Mothers dress is fur trimmed..I am not sure what kind of fur it is.  A beautiful family photo, I looked closely at the Dads ring and the boys locket, they appear to be different.

This photo was mailed a few weeks ago to Carol T. these are relatives of her husbands, either his Grandparents or Great Uncle and Aunt.  She said she would probably not know the difference.  Her daughter was interested in genealogy..so the photo was being sent to her.

I have no wonderful stories to share, Carol did say that if the lady in the photo was Mabel, that she was a lovely lady and she lived in Hubbard, Minnesota all her life.

Uncle Eds two first children

Photo Number 293 Monroe and Norma ( Ed and Edna’s first two children)

I mailed the photos to Monroe’s daughter Nina. I received these emails from her along with a story!

Hi Connie,

I did receive your e-mail.  I'm late in getting back to you because  I've been doing some investigating into our family history.  Our family would love to  have the pictures. I called my sister this morning to ask if Grandpa Newcomb had a sister and if she  lived in Minn.  She remembers visiting a lady in Alexander, Minn, when she was quite young
(1940's). We're not sure if she was a sister.

Grandpa came from strict Victorian family.  My sister has a wedding picture of Monroe (his father and mother) .

Ed and Edna had four children Monroe, Norma, twins  Donald and Dorothy.  He farmed with his sons south west of Eagle Grove, Iowa.  He had a great work ethic and we learned it well as we grew up on the farm.  One story I love to tell
that involved my dad and grandfather happened in the early '50's.  Homer and Sylvia  grandchildren, Larry and Joan Mehl,
we visiting for the summer.  They lived only a quarter mile from  us.  It had been a rainy spring and the creek near-by was over it's banks.  There was a rope bridge and guess what?  We decided to check it out.

My dad and grandpa were putting up fence and saw us with the help of  a younger cousin, who was not invited.  Grandpa thought my dad should check it out.  We  reached the bridge and the water was running and was quite high.  The older kids went to cross, but we younger ones stayed away.  It was probably a good idea because we saw dad standing behind a tree with a willow switch in his hand.  We could see we were in trouble so we headed for the house.  My sister, Linda was short and could not run as fast, so guess who felt the switch
the most.  What did we learn?

We learned to ask and to let someone know where we were off to.  We had to eat dinner with our younger cousin and if looks could kill.  Ha.

We have many stories.  Thank you so much for sending the pictures.

Take care and have a wonderful day.

Hi Connie,  I received the photos today.  Thank you so much.  I have shared the story of you
finding these photos with many of my friends and relatives.  They have found the story pretty
amazing.  My husband, Tom, will scan these and share them with family.  There was another
brother George who was a policeman in Eagle Grove.  I'm still finding out who else was in the
family.  I'll send you a e-mail if I do.  Thanks again.  Nina

Thanks to Iggy for his assistance in the research that made this Full Circle possible!  Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Cute girl

This is a cute little girl, HM Olson took this photo in Frazee Minnesota. I could be related to this young gal as I have many relatives over by Frazee..but this is an unmarked photo..so we will never know.  The photographer was only in the area in the year 1902..so that is the date we will use for this photo.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again!  This is photo number 300, it hardly seems possible.  I thank each and everyone of you that read this blog everyday, and I would like to say a special thank you to the readers who leave comments, I appreciate your input and support and help in placing some of these photo back with their families:)
