Photo Number 550

This photo is from the second Antique Shop in Dorset, Minnesota. I wonder if it was a wedding photo?  I am not sure.  I also wonder about the bouquet of flowers that are tucked into her blouse. It must have been fashionable in 1914 to wear a bouquet in such a way.

Photo Clara city Dorset Antiques The photo was in a lovely folder.

Wm. Donner was the photographer and he was only active as a photographer in Clara City one year and that was 1914.

Tomorrow we will begin a month of wedding photos.

A long time ago Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day.  I still like to think of it as the day that the graves of soldiers are decorated.
I have know idea who this Soldier is.  He served in the First World War, or the Great War.  This is a Real Photo Postcard with no markings.
World War One Soldier Postcard with no markings
Did he come back?  Did he live a long and happy life?  Did he have family?  The only thing we know for sure is that he fought for our freedom.

Thank you to the many soldiers in the past and in the present:)
Update from Al:
This soldier has the National Army emblem on his collar.  The National Army was the combined forces of old core of the regular United States Army the Army National Guard and all the draftees.  This group was formed in 1917 to fight in WWI.

Update: I heard from Les on March 13, 2012

Dear Connie,
I got quite a surprise this evening during a rare moment on the internet trying to make an attempt at keeping up with information overload. Someone named Natalia had sent me a message on Facebook in 2011 saying that she had seen my picture apparently on your blog, and sent me the link to photo # 548! In fact it is my senior picture from 1966. I was born in Hibbing in 1948, but family was and still is from Park Rapids and Arago area. I have two sisters as well as cousins in the area, at present. My son and I come to Lake Itasca to participate in the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers show days the third weekend in August every year. We are members of the club, along with my cousins and their children and grandchildren. How that picture showed up in an 'antique' shop sure baffles me! I'll try to look at some more of your photo's in the future as time permits. Thank you. Les            Class of '66

Evelyn 1931 Motley Ice cream Shop
This graduation photo is from Sincerely, Evelyn ‘31.  The photographer was Abrams Studio in Yakima, WN. ( I never knew that the abbreviation for Washington was WN..I always thought it was WA. )
Anyway, Evelyn looks very smart in her dark glasses.
This photograph shows lots of silvering. The silver in the photographic process has come to the surface of the photo and can be very reflective. It seems to be very noticeable in photographs in the 1920’s and the 1930’s.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Update: I found this in my files it is the back of Evelyn’s Photo.
Evelyn 1931 back of photo Apparently these are the people that received Evelyn’s photograph.  Mr and Mrs Albert Motl or Moll or ??

Update from Iggy:

Based on another photograph showing the class of Holy Rosary in Yakima, Washington - I think this is Evelyn Rabie. There is a direct link to/from Yakima to Minnesota - the Northern Pacific Railrad - and many immigrants moved from MN to WA (or WN) "back in the day".

This week we will look at some old graduation photos.  It is that time of year.  Here in Minnesota when a young man or woman graduates from high school, there is a open house with lots of food.  Neighbors and relatives come and go all afternoon or evening, you hope that they are not all bunched up on the same day..because the food is usually awesome!
Lotza Love Bob WHS PR Antiques This is Bob, he signed his photo Lotza Love, Bob.   Zintsmaster of Minneapolis was the photographer.  He was in Minneapolis in 1920.   WHS..right away I thought of Wayzata High School, because that is a ritzy area near the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

This is a Cabinet Card from Solway, Minnesota.

Three women Crookston from Soloway Antiques The women are unidentified, but I suspect that they  might be a Mother and her daughters.  They all have lots of buttons and lots of pleats in their heavy skirts.  The gal on the left has some kind of circles on her dress..three on each side of her buttons.

The photographer was P E Lynne of Crookston, Minnesota.  He was a photographer there from 1894 to 1896 and then around 1900.  The ladies dresses seem to point to the year 1900. I wonder what the occasion was?

That old clothes line pole certainly needs straightening.  I am reminded in these old photos that the grass in the lawn was only cut a couple of times a year.  We used to cut our grass with one of the old whirly bladed push mowers..it was hard to push in long grass. If the grass was too long, we raked it up and threw it over the fence to the cows.

Update: Info From Norkio on the shoes:
The shoes the boy is wearing are called Brogans or similar. The girl has on Mary Jane's. They were probably inexpensive single last or double last shoes. I forget when they went to the double last. Might have been at the turn of the century.

I could not figure out the purpose of this photo..so I would appreciate your opinion.  I will guess that this was taken sometime around 1870 to 1880.  Is it a photograph in front of another photograph?  What is up with the white hankie?

This is a very old CdV from the Antique Shop in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.  I think of it as one of those pioneer family photos…one where they just stepped off the wagon and went to have their photo taken.
Pioneer Couple DL AntiquesCdV

Sadly the photo is not marked.  However I found this info about the photographer and his work.  During 1868 to 1870 Cartes-de –visites are printed on the verso with the statement   “From W. L. Barnes Photograph and Gem Gallery Union Block, Winona.”

So this is probably one of the oldest photos I have. It is 141 to 143years old.

On the verso..how many of you have heard that term before? I had not.  The back of something is called the verso, the front of something the recto..I learn something new everyday!

May 6th trough the 12th is National Nurses week.  I have been collecting old photos of Nurses.  My oldest daughter is a Registered Nurse.  Nurses are special people.
Nurses cap We will start with this photo, remember those two boxes of photos I bought long ago that started this blog.  This photo was in one of those boxes.
Nurses capThis is the signature of the photographer..your guess will be as good as mine who he was.  I have darkened the signature to see it better.

I think that this is a photo from around 1910, because of her high white collar and how her cap sits on her head.  Caps were used as a way to keep your hair in place and to present a professional appearance..and then there is the ceremonial purpose of the capping ceremony.  Now a days they have a pinning ceremony instead..not nearly as dramatic as the old capping ceremonies.

Marion Virginia Wald 5 weeks old.  This is an Azo Postcard that was used from 1904 to 1918.
This may be a possibility: In the 1920 Census I found a Virginia Wald 1 and 6/12 who was born in New York  living with Marie Wald 24 married who was born in Minnesota. They were living on Wisconsin Street in Chicago (City) ILL. No occupation is listed for the Mother, they are both listed as roomers. There is a Jack Wald, 28  listed further up in the census that is from New York who is married and an Actor in Moving Pictures. The three are not listed consecutively in the census, but the child Virginia is listed as having a Father from New York and a Mother from Minnesota.

Update from Iggy:
Jack Wald of New York Co., New York married Mary Olsen of Pipestone Co., Minnesota on 25-Jul-1917 in Pipestone, Minnesota. Mary was born 31-Jan-1895. On 1930, Jack doesn't appear with mother (35 years old) and daughter (11 years old and who was apparently born in NY) who are still living in Chicago, Illinois.

Another Marion Wald has been found..either of these could be the baby in the photo.

This is what I heard back,

Hi Connie,

What a surprise to receive your letter!  Even though we have a copy of the photo you found, we would appreciate having another for our kids.

Sincerely,

Harris & Carol

I asked if Harris had any stories to share with us.

Carol wrote back: I do remember him saying when they had snowstorms and the drifts would be up to the eaves, he thought the whole world was snowy!!

I mailed off the photo on April 12 and heard back from Harris and Carol on April 28th.

Yes, we received it.  Thanks so much.  I'm sure one of our kids will want an extra copy of this cute little boy!!
