Photo Number 922

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Duluth Minnesota.

Wedding couple lacy dress Duluth

The bride is wearing a very lacy gown most likely with a hoop skirt. I believe I see a tiara type headpiece which may have a veil attached to the back..   The groom is wearing a white sport coat.  It was most like a candlelight ceremony.

This is the last of the wedding photos for awhile.  I have almost enough for another month..they are one of my favorite photos to collect.

Wedding Group Late 1940 Casselton ND DL Antiques

The women are dressed so much alike it is hard to tell who the bride is..they could have switched places..perhaps it was a double wedding day.

I think that this photo was taken in the late 1940’s.  After WWII  women went back to gowns for their wedding attire.

My Dad had a suit very much like these men, a double breasted pin stripe..my Dad’s suit was brown.  He wore it to several weddings as the best man in the late 1940’s.

The men in the photos show their personality with their wild ties!

Wedding photo Large corsage Perham Antiques

This could be from the 1930’s or from the 1940’s.  The groom is wearing a double breasted suit.  The bride appears to be wearing a very nice dress with a scalloped collar, bows down the front along with a huge corsage.

Wedding photo headband and rings Perham Antiques

I think this photo is from the early 1930’s.  I see the shine of silk stockings and the glasses look 1930’s to me. This may or may not be a wedding photograph..I think it is because of the headband and she shows off her ring in the photo.  Her dress appears to have a dropped waist and a pleated skirt.

Personally I do not like his body language…his legs are crossed away from her..but her feet are crossed toward him.  To me that means he was unhappy or indifferent to the marriage.

Photo Number 915

This is a photo from Buggy Wheel Antiques near Lake Park Minnesota.  This is my favorite dress and veil so far. It is a simply elegant dress with a great veil.   This bride has style..even her bouquet is different.  To me her bouquet looks like it is the shape of a big bow. Berget Warren mn Buggy Wheel Antiques Love her veil

The photographers name is on the outside of the folder.  Martin J. Berget was in Warren Minnesota from 1905 to 1927. He was from Norway and he died in 1927.  He sold his studio before his death..but apparently something went wrong as his son Norman took over the business in 1929.  I think this photo was taken in the 1920’s.

In a nutshell the silvery sheen on some of the old photos:

Silver nitrate is part of the chemical dark room film process.  Silver nitrate is not light sensitive but the other silvers used are.  Silver Bromide, Silver Chloride and Silver Iodide are ground up and mixed with a gelatin.  That gelatin covers a clear backing..or the film base.

I have never seen the dark room process..but I bet it is very interesting.

Wedding Lauritson Valley City Photog DLAntiques

The photographer was Lauritson in Valley City N.D.  I  really appreciated not only the photo but the folder that shows off this photo.  It is very elegant.

Wedding Lauritson Valley City Photog DLAntiques

The bride’s gown is trimmed with sparkles, he veil is unusual and may be a one of a kind creation. I am not sure if she is wearing earrings or not..there is something seriously dangly that is either earrings or a part of her veil.

This wedding photograph must have been taken in the 1920’s.

Wedding photo big bows on bouquet and shoes Perham Antiques

The groom appears to be wearing a double breasted belted suit jacket…a style that I have not seen before.  The bride is wearing a white or light colored pastel gown that has some kind of overskirt that comes to square points.  Her bouquet and the bow are large and she wears a single strand of pearls and her shoes have bows too!

I will guess that this is also a photo from the 1920’s or 1930’s.  It may be a foreign photo.

Tr Burfield wedding photo Dorset Antiques

The photographer is T J Burfield of Waconia Minn.  The information found at the Minnesota Historical Society list of photographers showed this photographer in business in Waconia in the late 1890’s.  Obviously this photo is not from that time frame.

I will guess it is from the 1920’s or 1930’s.  I purchased it because?? Why?? The huge bouquet that seems to be attached to the shawl collar of her sweater!   She does have a glimmer of a smile and her hair looks like it has finger waves.

Wedding Large Bouquet Black dress and Hat Buggy Wheel Antiques

I wonder if this could be a foreign photo?  The cut of his suit is different, with three buttons right in front and what looks to be darts or a gathering on the side of the suit coat.  He is also wearing a thin tie.  The bride is wearing a beautiful dark dress with light colored embroidery, with a large hat and and large bouquet and a single strand of pearls.  She is also wearing what appears to be patent leather shoes.

I will guess this photo was taken in the early 1920’s.

Wedding 1926 Grand Rapids but from PR

Taylor Studio in Grand Rapids Minnesota was in business around 1926 so that is the date we will pick for the photo.

The ladies are wearing very similar dropped waist dresses and hair styles..this may be the haircut called the Dutch Boy.  The Dutch Boy is described as being a square cut with bangs. The1920’s is when women cut their long hair short in a bob.  The bride is holding a large bouquet of flowers. The groom is unremarkable but he does have a large boutonniere.

The bride is wearing a shorter length dress she also has a hat and a large bouquet along with her corsage.  The groom wears a corsage..his hair style was popular around 1910..( I have a photo of a relative taken in 1911 with the same haircut.) It appears that this groom didn’t follow the men’s fashion trends..could be if he found a hair style he liked he wore it for years.

D Stadin was the photographer in Cambridge Minnesota. He was in Cambridge in 1907 and then again in 1914.

Here we have an entire wedding party.  In my non expert opinion it could be either year.  I cannot decide. I was quite intrigued with the lace edge of the bride’s gown..it looks like a beautiful trim.

Wedding photo Friend or relative of Elmer Westling DL Antiques
The bride wears a wedding bonnet that is decorated with flowers. she also has a bouquet of flowers in her lap.  Her dress seems shorter than most..and her shoes look to be regular shoes…they look like flats with square bows and a strap. The groom looks to be wearing a suit with a white bowtie..he is sitting quite casually. He has a single rose boutonniere.

I will guess that this photo was taken in the 1910’s.

Wedding Balled up head piece Duluth Antiques

The groom is wearing a double breasted sack jacket which was all the rage about 1910.  The bride has pulled fashions from the late 1890’s the flowers across her chest, the long wedding bonnet with trailing vines and her almost pigeon breasted gown/blouse from the early 1900’s.  Her dress does not look white to me..I imagine it as a pastel color..blue perhaps..or beige.  I bought this photo because of the balled up tulle that is part of her wedding bonnet.

The photographer is E.D. Berg from Cloquet Minnesota.  He was there from 1900 to 1920.

A couple both sitting down, a pose rarely seen.  This photo was most likely taken right around 1900.  The bride’s white dress is pigeon breasted, she has flowers and trailing vines on her bridal bonnet, a corsage and she carries a bouquet. The groom wears a white bowtie and a corsage.  The bride seems to be leaning on her husband for support.

This is a very good example of a dark very practical wedding dress, one that could be worn again.  The wedding bonnet and the corsages are what distinguishes this as a wedding photo…and look she has taken his arm!

This photo dates from 1897 to early 1900, when Ole Flaten was in Moorhead at the 4th and Front Street address.

Cabinet Card Happy Wedded couple Duluth

Such a happy couple.  They both look like they are frowning.  Remember they did not smile because the exposure time was too great and most of the people back then had no dental care.  They both have lovely corsages, he wears that plaid bowtie well and her dress appears to be a dark color damask with a white bodice and a lovely brooch.

Most likely this photo is from the late 1890’s..1897 or later.

This is the back of the card.

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Grand Forks North Dakota.  It was a gift from my daughter Jen.   She knows I like the wedding photos!

Cabinet Card from Jen Grand Forks Antique mall

This bride and groom are almost sitting “doll like” in their respective chairs.  The bride has a corsage and there are also flowers on the table, she is wearing a white gown, it has very tight sleeves and is trimmed with some extra lace that accentuates the top of her dress and the top of her sleeves.  The groom has a boutonniere and is wearing a three piece suit with a white bowtie.  She is sporting a ring..but he is not.

This cabinet card has scalloped edges which usually means it is from the 1890’s.  Demner is the photographer from Creighton Neb.

Wedding Waistcoat 1900 Flaten in Moorhead DL Antiques

Here we have a groom in a frock coat. A frock coat was always knee length and double breasted with peaked lapels.  It was sometimes called a Prince Albert. The groom is wearing a single rose as a boutonniere.

The bride is wearing a dress that has huge sleeves reminiscent of the style around 1895.  She has a bouquet of roses and is wearing flowers around her neck and has a very long wedding bonnet.  Her dress may also have a train, there seems to be lots of fabric on the floor.

Ole Flaten was in Moorhead a long time from 1887 to 1928. This photograph  with the address Cor. of 4th and Front streets could be when he was at South Front Street East of 4th in 1893 or Fourth and Front Streets in 1900. Wedding Waistcoat Flaten in Moorhead Back DL

A lovely couple posed on one of those old photographers stand by an animal rug.  The bride is wearing a pastel colored skirt and jacket  with a white blouse and a long wedding bonnet that is adorned with flowers.  Both the bride and the groom are wearing a corsage of flowers and they are showing off their rings quite nicely.  We even have a couple that seem to be looking at the photographer and they are almost smiling!

I think this photo is from 1898 or 1899.

They are holding hands..but looking opposite directions.  Again we have flowers over the chest area of the dress and she wears flowers in her hair.  She is wearing fingerless white gloves and her dress seems to have fuller sleeves and has lots dark trim including a bow at the waist.

A. Forsander was a photographer in Negaunee Michigan from 1900 to 1910…I wonder if he was there during the 1890’s also.  Because I would like to date this dress to the early 1890’s.

Wedding Photo Cabinet Card CB Colburn Perham antiques back

I found that C. B. Colburn was a photographer in Bay City Michigan from 1890 to 1910.  The bride’s dress looks like it has an overskirt and perhaps even a bustle..which doesn’t quite fit the time frame. The grooms coat is buttoned at the top button which usually indicates the 1880’s.  So this is a confusing card to date.

This is one of the few wedding photos with a name.

Bernice Measner Grand Rapids

Wade Loofbourow II was most likely the photographer in Osceola Mills, Wis . This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Grand Rapids Minnesota.

Osceola Mills was  a grain milling and steamboat building town, the railroad came to town in 1883.

Bernice Measner two

Bernice Measner may be in the photo or perhaps the photo was sent to Bernice.

I think this photo may be from around the late 1890’s or early 1900’s.  The trailing greens and flowers on the wedding bonnet were very popular around 1900.  The groom looks much older than the bride.

Photo Number 893

It is June and here we are looking at a whole month of wedding photographs!  I like the old wedding photos and I buy almost everyone I see.
This is a Cabinet Card from 1880 to 1881.  I purchased it in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.
Flaten Moorhead DL Antiques 2 1880 to 1881
I believe this is a good example of the Natural Form Bustle that had lots of different fabrics and layers but had a straight skirt that hugged the legs. The Natural Form was popular from 1877 to 1882. (Noriko will correct me if I am wrong on the Natural Form) In the early 1880’s it was also popular for men to button just the top button of their jacket.
This is the back of the cabinet card.
Flaten Moorhead DL Antiques back 2 1880 to 1881
O.E. Flaten of Moorhead Minnesota was the photographer.  He was in Moorhead Minnesota for many years. Beginning with the year 1880 and 1881 and ending in 1928.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
From Noriko:
Natural form was not considered bustle. The skirts were sometimes hobbled, in that they were tied closely around the knees. The look was to elongate the body into a willowy and elegant shape. At the time, it was just the next fashion after the bustle period - what we consider the Early Bustle period. The Natural Form look was a rejection of the exaggerated look of the bustle period. At the same time, the Women's Dress Reform movement was also taking place and probably influenced the fashions. The dress reform movement called for less fabric and more practical clothing, although it did not call for getting rid of the corset for some reason. Of course, the high fashion houses in Paris soundly whipped the Natural Form and the dress reform movement into submission with the Late Bustle fashions which were larger, more exaggerated and more decorated than ever! --Norkio
